Government Benefits That May Help Pay for Care
Depending on your circumstances, you may be entitled to financial support towards the cost of care.
Attendance Allowance
Eligibility Criteria:
- State Pension age or older
- Need help with personal care or supervision because of illness or disability
- Have needed help for at least six months (unless terminally ill)
- Normally live in the UK
Attendance Allowance has two payment rates depending on the level of care required.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
Eligibility Criteria:
- Aged 16 years or over and below State Pension age
- Have a long-term physical or mental health condition
- Experience difficulties with daily activities or mobility
- Have had these difficulties for at least three months and expect them to continue for at least nine months
PIP consists of a Daily Living Component and a Mobility Component.
Carer’s Allowance
Eligibility Criteria:
- Care for someone at least 35 hours per week
- Be aged 16 or over
- Meet earnings requirements
- The person you care for receives a qualifying disability benefit
NHS Continuing Healthcare
Eligibility Criteria:
- Significant and ongoing health needs
- Complex medical requirements
- Assessment demonstrating a primary health need
Funding is not dependent upon savings, income, or property.
Local Authority Care Funding
Eligibility Criteria:
- A Care Needs Assessment identifies eligible care needs
- A Financial Assessment demonstrates eligibility for support
- Individual savings and assets fall below the local authority threshold
Direct Payments
Eligibility Criteria:
- Eligible for local authority-funded social care
- Willing and able to manage the payments independently or with support
Direct Payments give individuals greater control over arranging their own care and choosing their preferred care provider.
